Why are there jokers in a deck of playing cards?

HI,

For poker and a few other games.

Have fun playing

Why are there jokers in a deck of playing cards?
when they were first made ,it gave you two extra cards in the pack in case you lost 1 or 2 and not have to buy another pack(so still produced as ) and you could name the card as the missing one !!! (hence jokers are wild)
Reply:i don't know. seems whatever game i play, i always have to take them out first.

i think they are used for some games though, as wild cards probably.
Reply:I dont know, but since they are wild cards, I need them to win.
Reply:We used to use them as wild cards in the game 'Canasta'. Brilliant game, wish I could remember how to play it.
Reply:you need them for some games
Reply:Well, for example if you play lowball (poker) it can be use as an A, or to complete for straights, flushs.

Take care
Reply:Apparently the Joker was added sometime in the 19th century as the highest card in the deck. It become more widely spread because of the popularity of poker. But it is from wikipedia, so that information could be inaccurate.
Reply:Good question
